HDFC Bank Internet banking Customer ID (Cust ID), IPIN, etc...
December 19, 2005
After opening an SB account with HDFC bank you will receive a package from them through courier. This will contain ATM cards (more than one if its a joint account), IPIN number - the number that you use for internet banking, ITIN number (telephone banking number) and cheque book.
Once I received these, I thought I'd go and try to log into my HDFC account online. Well, it's not as easy as that. You go to www.hdfcbank.com and click on the net banking login button. You are prompted for "Customer ID" (Cust ID) and password - well what is this customer id?
No where in all the documents that you receive from HDFC bank is it mentioned. I though it might be my account number, but then the box does not allow you to input a number that long. Just to make sure, I search through all the material that I got in the courier - no for sure it's not there. (Don't go looking now - take my word) In fact you may have looked through it a couple of times - otherwise you will not be reading this! :)
So, I call up HDFC bank - and it took a while to get connected. The Trivandrum branch I had the account with has four numbers (0471-2559802 to ...5). But all of the numbers were either engaged, or no one was picking up the phone. I had to try at intervals for more than an hour to get connected.
Once you get connected, you give them your account number and they give you your customer id number.
Well, is that all - no not really. Now if you go back and enter your customer id and IPIN, you will still get an error message - it says that you have either entered it incorrectly more than 5 times, or you have not used it for more than 180 days. You will be given an online form to fill up to enable your account. I've done this and am now waiting for it to be enabled.
Well, I ask myself - should it not be easier - should they not mention the Cust ID in one of the letters. Or should they at least not mention the fact that you have to call them up to get this mysterious Customer ID? That's why I wrote this blog - may be it will be useful to others like me who have this same problem. Maybe someone from HDFC bank will come across this blog and try to correct it.
